Marie Kreutzer is back. The Austrian writer/director is following her irreverent Empress Elisabeth biopic “Corsage” with one of the darkest films on the 2026 fall calendar. “Gentle Monster” is a family drama about abusers hiding in plain sight and how the people around them cope after learning horrifying information about people they love. The subject matter ensures that the film is a difficult viewing experience, but the pedigree of artists behind it could make it one of the most vital works of the season.
An official synopsis of “Gentle Monster” reads: “When a police raid shatters her life, concert pianist Lucy (Léa Seydoux) must protect her son and confront how little she knows her husband after he is accused of an unspeakable crime in this tense thriller about trust and survival.”
“Gentle Monster” premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where critics praised Seydoux’s performance and Kreutzer’s unflinching approach to studying the ugly nuances of child sex abuse.
“Among other things, this tough and unflinching social drama is a study in how painful it can be for a rhetorical question — like ‘Would I lie to you, baby?,’ for example — to sour into the stomach-churning stuff of an urgent mystery,” IndieWire’s David Ehrlich wrote in his Cannes review. “For the terms of a relationship to change faster than the facts of the matter are able to keep up with, let alone the feelings that might attend to them. ‘There is no “off button” for pedophilia,’ someone explains to Lucy at one point. There isn’t an ‘off button’ for love either.”
In addition to Seydoux, “Gentle Monster” stars Jella Haase, Laurence Rupp, and Catherine Deneuve. Kreutzer reteams with several of her “Corsage” collaborators for the film, including director of photography Judith Kaufmann, editor Ulrike Kofler, and composer Camille.
“Gentle Monster” will next screen as a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival. The screening is billed as the film’s Canadian Premiere, suggesting that a Telluride bow could also be in play before its Netflix release.
“Gentle Monster” opens in select theaters on Friday, October 30 before streaming on Netflix on November 18. Watch the film’s first teaser below.
