US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has flown to meet sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and present them with a Presidential Unit Citation, as the aircraft carrier prepares to return to San Diego after more than 300 days at sea.
The carrier’s crew are expected to arrive back on US soil on Thursday. Mr Hegseth travelled to meet the troops a day before their scheduled homecoming.
The Presidential Unit Citation is the highest honour a military unit can receive.
The presentation comes as the sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln complete their lengthy deployment and prepare to return home.
