A historic Catholic church in Roseville, Michigan, has been demolished to make way for a new Sheetz petrol station and convenience store.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, near the junction of Utica Road and Gratiot Avenue in Macomb County, had stood vacant since closing in 2017. Demolition of the church building began this week after earlier work cleared other structures on the site. The parish traced its roots to 1861 and served the local community for more than a century and a half. The church was closed amid financial difficulties and falling attendance, according to local reports.
Roseville church demolition clears way for Sheetz
Sheetz acquired the property after plans for an approximately $8 million development were approved by Roseville’s planning authorities. The project faced opposition, including unsuccessful legal efforts to prevent the sale and demolition. Nicholas Ruffner, Sheetz’s public affairs manager, said the company recognised the building’s importance to Roseville and had worked with the city, the Archdiocese of Detroit and members of the community during the clearance.
Some elements of the church are being preserved, including roof tiles, entry doors, the bell and other religious and architectural artefacts. Roseville city records show that St Pio of Pietrelcina sought a waiver of demolition fees to reclaim materials from the building for reuse. New Sheetz store planned for the site
The replacement development will include a roughly 6,100-square-foot, 24-hour store with 14 fuelling positions, indoor and outdoor seating, and touchscreen ordering for made-to-order food and drinks. Sheetz has said construction is expected to begin this autumn, with the Roseville branch targeted to open in 2027. The Pennsylvania-based chain has been expanding across the Detroit metropolitan area, with stores already operating in communities including Romulus, Chesterfield, Warren and Eastpointe.
The demolition marks the end of the building’s presence on one of Roseville’s prominent thoroughfares, almost a decade after the church was closed and left unused.
