A wellness check at a home in Newbury Park, California, led to the discovery of an elderly married couple, as detectives investigate the circumstances of their deaths.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office communications staff received a call at about 11.11am on Monday, 21 September, from a man who said he had been unable to contact relatives living at a property in the unit block of Lucas Court.
Deputies assigned to the Thousand Oaks Police Department attended the address and found Aleksander Tukalski, 89, and his wife, Kazia Berlach Tukalska, 86, dead inside the house.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau and Thousand Oaks Police Department launched a joint investigation. Detectives obtained a search warrant and examined the property alongside an investigator from the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office.
A firearm was recovered from the home, although officials have not said whether it was connected to the deaths or who owned it.
Authorities have not yet established the cause or manner of death. The Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to carry out examinations as the investigation continues.
Detectives said they believed the incident was isolated and that there was no outstanding threat to the public.
