Penélope Cruz was reduced to uncontrollable sobs as Bunker received a 15-and-a-half-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday night.
The actress and her husband, Javier Bardem, were attending the premiere of Florian Zeller’s psychological thriller at the Sala Grande, where they play a married couple facing a crisis.
As the applause continued, Bardem comforted Cruz before kissing her. The emotional response made Bunker the most warmly received film of the 2026 festival so far.
Zeller then took both actors by the hands and brought them towards the front of the auditorium. Bardem stepped aside and gestured towards his wife as the audience continued to applaud.
Cruz, who wore a red Chanel gown designed by Matthieu Blazy, appeared visibly overwhelmed by the reception and mouthed her thanks to the crowd.
Bunker earns major response at Venice Film Festival
The ovation was just two minutes short of the 17-minute reception given to Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door at Venice in 2024.
Other films to receive lengthy applause at this year’s festival include John Malkovich’s Wild Horse Nine, which was met with 13 minutes of acclaim, while Primetime and Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard each received seven-minute ovations.
In Bunker, Bardem plays Miguel, an architect whose 17-year marriage to Sofia, portrayed by Cruz, comes under strain after he agrees to design a survivalist shelter for a technology billionaire played by Paul Dano.
Sofia begins working with an American novelist, Jeremy Gray, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger, as the couple’s relationship reaches breaking point.
The film marks the ninth time Cruz and Bardem have appeared on screen together. They first met while making the 1992 Spanish film Jamon Jamon, but began a relationship only after reuniting for 2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, for which Cruz won the Academy Award for best supporting actress.
The couple married in 2010 and have two children, son Leo, 15, and daughter Luna, 13.
