Kelly Clarkson has described an alleged New York store snub as a scene straight out of Pretty Woman, claiming an employee treated her as though she could not afford the merchandise.
The singer criticised Art of Play, a Brooklyn shop specialising in puzzles, games and toys, after visiting because she liked the look of the store and had several items in mind to buy.
Clarkson said the employee appeared to make assumptions about her finances and offered to help her find something comparable instead.
She said she responded by telling the employee that the shop had just lost out on a substantial sale. Clarkson did not identify the person involved or disclose what she had intended to purchase.
In a post on X, she compared the encounter with the moment in the 1990 film Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts’ character, Vivian, is dismissed by saleswomen at an upmarket Beverly Hills boutique.
Vivian later returns after spending heavily elsewhere and delivers the line: “Big mistake. Big. Huge.”
Clarkson moved to New York City in 2023. The singer has not suggested that the experience involved any refusal to serve her, but said the treatment left her unimpressed.
Art of Play had not seemingly addressed the allegation.
