High winds and heavy rain caused power outages, fallen trees and travel disruption across western Washington on Friday, with gusts of up to 50mph forecast in parts of the region.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for coastal areas and parts of the southern Puget Sound, including Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and surrounding communities. It warned that strong winds could bring down tree limbs, blow unsecured objects around and lead to further power cuts.
Seattle City Light restored electricity to thousands of customers as crews responded to weather-related faults. Tacoma Public Utilities also reported that 4,006 customers were without power during the storm.
Power outages and road closures
A tree fell on to a car in downtown Seattle, while crews dealt with debris and blocked routes elsewhere. Motorists were warned to expect difficult conditions, particularly on exposed roads and routes affected by fallen branches.
State Route 507 near Tenino was closed after trees came down across the carriageway. Crews were also working to clear a road in Olympia, while rain temporarily halted repairs to the Klein Ditch Bridge on SR 9.
Standing water was reported on an off-ramp from the West Seattle Bridge, adding to concerns for drivers during the wet and windy conditions.
Seattle authorities advised residents to store or secure loose outdoor items and to avoid approaching fallen power lines. Seattle City Light says people should stay at least 30 feet away from a downed line and call 911.
The fast-moving weather system was expected to clear during Friday evening, with calmer and drier conditions forecast for the weekend.
