Liverpool interest in Alejandro Balde has emerged ahead of the January transfer window, with the Barcelona defender being considered as a potential solution to the club’s concerns at left-back.
Balde, 22, was linked with a move away from Barcelona during the summer and has reportedly struggled to secure regular opportunities. Manchester United have also been mentioned as a possible destination for the Spain international.
Liverpool weigh up left-back options
Liverpool are understood to need greater depth in the position, with Milos Kerkez yet to establish himself and Kostas Tsimikas also facing criticism over his performances.
Lewis Steele, speaking on the Anfield Index podcast, said: “I think Liverpool will go for a new left-back. I think that realistically Liverpool would have wanted the left-back this summer because, as we’ve seen so far this season, Kerkez is still not there yet. Tsimikas just doesn’t look good enough.”
Steele added that Balde’s name was understandable in the context of Liverpool’s needs, saying: “It might make sense financially and his situation in terms of playing time and whatever.”
The young defender’s reported lack of regular football at Barcelona could make a move to the Premier League appealing. Liverpool would be able to offer him the opportunity to play more often, while Balde’s age and potential could make him a long-term option at left-back.
It remains uncertain whether Liverpool will make a formal approach in January. Barcelona could be prepared to consider offers for Balde if the price is right, although any move will depend on the terms being acceptable to the Spanish club.
