Liverpool are considering a move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, potentially joining Manchester United in the race for the Spain international ahead of the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old has had limited opportunities under Hansi Flick this season and has made only a brief appearance so far. His lack of regular football has raised the possibility of a departure from the Camp Nou.
Alejandro Balde attracts Liverpool and Manchester United interest
Manchester United explored a deal for Balde during the summer and held discussions with his representative, Jorge Mendes. The move ultimately failed to progress after Barcelona indicated that they wanted a permanent transfer rather than a loan.
Liverpool are now monitoring the defender as they assess their options at left-back. Milos Kerkez has yet to fully establish himself, while Kostas Tsimikas is approaching the final stages of his contract at Anfield.
Barcelona are understood to be willing to consider Balde’s departure for a fee in the region of €40 million. That valuation could allow Liverpool to pursue a deal, although a number of clubs are reportedly interested in the defender.
Balde remains keen to succeed at Barcelona, but his restricted playing time could force him to reconsider his position if his circumstances do not improve in the coming months.
Liverpool’s existing relationship with Barcelona, following Ronald Araujo’s loan move, could also prove useful if the club decides to step up its interest. For Manchester United, the emerging competition would make their pursuit of Balde more complicated.
Much is likely to depend on the defender’s playing time between now and January, with his future at Barcelona increasingly uncertain.
