Liverpool are considering a summer move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde as they review their options at right-back, although their plans could be shaped by Ronald Araujo’s future.
A report has suggested that the France international is among the players being assessed at Anfield. Any potential approach is likely to depend on whether Liverpool decide to make Araujo’s loan move permanent.
Liverpool interest in Jules Kounde
Kounde, 27, has established himself as an experienced defender in Spanish football but his position at Barcelona is understood to have become less certain in recent weeks. He has reportedly fallen out of favour under manager Hansi Flick, raising the possibility of a departure.
Liverpool are believed to view the Frenchman as a player who could add both reliability and versatility to their defensive options. His experience could also allow him to compete for a regular starting role if the club decide to pursue the deal.
However, negotiations could prove difficult, with Barcelona reportedly seeking a fee of about £60 million or more for the defender.
Araujo’s performances may ultimately determine whether Liverpool retain that interest. The Uruguayan has impressed since joining on loan from Barcelona and has recently featured at right-back.
Liverpool have the option to sign Araujo permanently for around £47 million and are expected to assess his displays before reaching a final decision. If he continues to make an impression, the club may conclude that they already have a suitable answer in the position and end their pursuit of Kounde.
