Liverpool are drawing up plans for new right-back options, with Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu and Roma’s Wesley Franca understood to be on the club’s shortlist for next summer.
The position has become a concern for manager Andoni Iraola. Jeremie Frimpong has not fully convinced defensively, while Conor Bradley remains sidelined after undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury.
Liverpool have consequently been forced into makeshift solutions, including using Ronald Araujo in the role. The club now appear intent on finding a more dependable long-term option.
Kalulu and Wesley emerge as Liverpool right-back targets
Kalulu is regarded as one of the leading possibilities. The 26-year-old can operate at right-back or in central defence, with his versatility and athleticism adding to his appeal.
Juventus are not believed to want to lose the Frenchman, who is contracted until 2029. The Italian club are reportedly working on an improved agreement as they seek to make him an important part of Luciano Spalletti’s long-term plans.
Liverpool are also monitoring Wesley Franca, with scouts understood to have followed the 23-year-old Brazilian during recent Serie A matches.
Wesley would provide a younger and more attack-minded alternative, whereas Kalulu offers greater experience and tactical flexibility. Liverpool’s need is understood to be for a defender who can provide more security without compromising their quality in possession.
Frimpong already offers a strongly attacking presence from the position, making defensive reliability a particular consideration. Bradley’s uncertain recovery has increased the importance of adding another trusted option.
The weakness was exposed during Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat by Manchester City, underlining the risks on that side against leading opposition. Kalulu’s ability to cover both full-back and central defence could therefore make him an especially practical target as the club considers its recruitment plans.
