Liverpool are reportedly expecting Giovanni Leoni to return from his ACL injury later this month, offering a boost to their defensive options. The 19-year-old centre-back has made only one competitive appearance for the club since joining from Parma in the summer of 2025.
Leoni suffered the injury on his Liverpool debut last season, a setback that halted the early stages of his career at Anfield. He is now understood to be nearing a return to first-team action.
Giovanni Leoni’s Liverpool return
Liverpool had planned to introduce Leoni gradually, with the Italian viewed as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. His performances for Parma had made a strong impression before his move to Merseyside.
Despite his lengthy spell on the sidelines, Leoni is said to have maintained a positive approach and used the time to learn more about Liverpool and improve his English. His professionalism and attitude have also been well received by staff at the club.
His return could prove particularly valuable after Ibrahima Konate’s departure at the end of last season. Liverpool also have promising young defender Jeremy Jacquet, while Ronald Araujo has made a bright start since joining on loan from Barcelona.
Leoni will still need time to readjust to competitive football after his absence, but his availability could provide Liverpool with another option in central defence and add renewed depth to the squad.
