Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez were booked after becoming involved in a stoppage-time brawl during Hungary’s 1-0 Nations League defeat by Ukraine at the Puskás Aréna.
The confrontation erupted in the 94th minute as Hungary searched for an equaliser, following a series of late challenges and incidents involving time-wasting.
Szoboszlai and Kerkez involved in late confrontation
Hungary captain Szoboszlai was drawn into a heated exchange with Ukraine forward Viktor Tsygankov, prompting players and members of both coaching staffs to move towards the incident.
Kerkez then joined the melee after seeing his captain and Liverpool team-mate surrounded by Ukraine players. Both Liverpool players received yellow cards as the referee attempted to restore order.
Ukraine’s Oleksandr Nazarenko was shown a second yellow card during the altercation and sent off, leaving the visitors with 10 men for the closing stages.
The flashpoint overshadowed an otherwise closely contested match, with Hungary unable to turn their possession and second-half pressure into an equaliser.
Ukraine had taken the lead in the 42nd minute when Danylo Sikan converted from Heorhiy Sudakov’s pass. Hungary pushed forward after the interval but could not find a way through the visitors’ defence.
