Arsenal’s interest in Julian Alvarez has been given a fresh point of focus after the Atletico Madrid forward moved to appoint a new representative following a failed summer transfer.
Alvarez ended his long-standing relationship with agent Fernando Hidalgo during a turbulent period in which he was unable to secure a move away from Atletico. The Argentina international had been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona before the transfer deadline, but the Spanish club refused to consider his departure.
Julian Alvarez agent change keeps Arsenal interest alive
Mundo Deportivo reported that Alvarez has chosen Pablo Barquero as his preferred new agent, with an agreement expected to be formalised shortly. Barquero also represents Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
Javier Pastore’s agency and representatives connected to Jorge Mendes had also looked into the possibility of working with the 26-year-old. The change does not confirm that Alvarez will seek another transfer, but it could become significant if he pushes for a move next summer.
Arsenal remain interested after missing out during the recent window, while Barcelona had also made a strong effort to sign the striker. Barcelona’s position has since shifted, with sporting director Deco indicating publicly that the club had moved on, potentially reducing the competition for his signature.
Alvarez’s versatility remains one of his principal attractions to Arsenal. He can lead the line, play behind another forward or operate in a wider position, while his aggressive pressing and goalscoring would suit Mikel Arteta’s attack.
His previous spell at Manchester City means Alvarez already has experience of English football. Any deal would nevertheless be difficult, with the forward contracted to Atletico until 2030 and likely to command a substantial fee.
For now, the change of representation is an indication to monitor rather than evidence that a transfer is close. But if Alvarez seeks a new challenge again next summer, Arsenal are expected to remain among the clubs prepared to test Atletico’s resolve.
