Phil Foden was shown a red card in the 23rd minute of the Manchester derby, leaving Manchester City with ten men against Manchester United at half-time.
The England international was dismissed after kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, an incident former goalkeeper Paul Robinson described as “petulant” while covering the match for BBC Radio 5 Live.
Phil Foden criticised after Manchester derby red card
Robinson said: “Initially it looks really stupid from Phil Foden. He kicks out in the midriff of Bruno Fernandes.”
He added: “There is absolutely no way this is going to be overturned. That was petulant, that was stupid and he could have cost his side.”
The match remained goalless at the interval, with City having performed well in an otherwise even contest despite their numerical disadvantage.
However, Foden’s dismissal leaves Enzo Maresca’s side facing a difficult second half as United seek to make their extra man count. The City manager has the opportunity to make changes at the break, while the home side may show greater ambition after the interval.
Foden, who has struggled to find his best form for some time, now faces scrutiny over a costly lapse of judgement at a crucial stage of the match.
