Manchester United are expected to prioritise defensive signings in the January transfer window, with the club’s recruitment team viewing the back line as the next major phase of their squad rebuild.
The focus comes after United invested heavily in their attack and midfield during recent transfer windows, while a difficult start to the season has again highlighted weaknesses in defence.
Michael Carrick’s position remains under scrutiny, but INEOS are reportedly still minded to give the manager more time rather than make another immediate change in the dugout.
Manchester United set to target defenders in January
Football Insider reports that defenders will be considered before any other position when the transfer window opens. A further striker is not currently viewed as the club’s main priority.
Pete O’Rourke said: “For United right now, a new striker is not a top priority. (The priority is) probably rebuilding the defence, as obviously they have done the forward line and midfield in the last two summers.
“Going forward, United are looking to improve and restructure that defence, which will be the next stage of their process of rebuilding the squad.”
United’s senior defensive options currently include Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven also available.
However, the central defensive structure has changed little. Sky Sports noted before the season that United could begin the 2026/27 campaign with the same Shaw, Maguire, Martínez and Dalot back four used on the opening weekend of 2022/23.
The left-back position is considered particularly important, while another centre-back could also be required depending on the futures of Shaw, Maguire and other senior defenders.
United have refreshed their forward options with Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford among Carrick’s choices. Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have also strengthened the midfield, leaving defence as the least transformed area of the squad.
Carrick’s uncertain position adds another layer to the recruitment process, but the club’s defensive requirements are expected to remain regardless of who is in charge. January could therefore be centred on adding younger, quicker and more durable defenders rather than pursuing another major attacking signing.
