Manchester United have been linked with Antonio Conte as pressure grows on manager Michael Carrick, although the club are understood to be continuing to back him and have made no contact with the former Chelsea boss.
United’s slow start to the campaign has intensified scrutiny of Carrick. A late equaliser from Matheus Cunha secured a draw against Fulham, but the result did little to ease speculation over the manager’s position.
Carrick impressed during a caretaker spell last season, raising expectations ahead of his first full campaign in charge. However, results have not matched those hopes and Conte has emerged as a prominent name in discussion around a possible change.
Manchester United links with Conte grow
Conte’s availability has contributed to the speculation, while the Italian’s record as a highly experienced and successful manager makes him an obvious candidate in the eyes of some supporters.
His reputation for strict discipline may also appeal to fans who want a manager capable of imposing greater control on the squad. United have used a number of prominent coaches in recent years, leaving fewer high-profile options who have not already held the job or are not currently enjoying greater success elsewhere.
However, a report cited by TeamTalk said United were still backing Carrick and had not contacted Conte. The Italian’s fiery personality is also understood to have been a factor in the club not appointing him during previous managerial searches.
With results increasing the pressure on Carrick, Conte may continue to be discussed as a potential alternative. For now, though, there is no indication from the information available that United have taken steps towards appointing him.
