Manchester United player ratings reflected another difficult night for Michael Carrick’s side as they lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. The defeat increased the pressure on the manager after a series of underwhelming performances, including Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Tottenham.
United fell behind after only 50 seconds when Pablo Barrios took advantage of defensive uncertainty to fire Atletico into an early lead. Ademola Lookman added a second later in the match, while Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute.
Atletico controlled much of the contest, leaving United with few positives and further uncertainty over Carrick’s approach. Carlos Baleba and Lisandro Martinez were among the better performers, while Marcus Rashford endured a particularly frustrating evening.
Manchester United player ratings against Atletico Madrid
Senne Lammens – 6: He was not at his best for Atletico’s opening goal, although the goalkeeper was not primarily responsible for the defensive breakdown. Lammens made several saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming heavier.
Leny Yoro – 5: The young French defender produced another unconvincing display before his dismissal in the 74th minute added to United’s problems.
Diogo Dalot – 6: Dalot had a difficult evening at right-back, with Atletico left winger Alex Baena repeatedly causing him problems.
Lisandro Martinez – 7: Martinez was solid when called upon, but he could not compensate for the pressure created by Atletico’s dominant attack.
Ayden Heaven – 6: Filling in at left-back in an unfamiliar role, Heaven was not among United’s worst performers. Atletico nevertheless targeted his side of the pitch and found considerable success there.
Carlos Baleba – 7: Baleba made a strong first start for United, working hard and showing composure in possession. He appeared capable of becoming an asset with more matches behind him.
Andrey Santos – 6: Santos was less influential than his midfield partner, although the performance offered something to build on after limited opportunities so far this season.
Youri Tielemans – 5: Given a more advanced role and less defensive responsibility, Tielemans was unable to make the most of the opportunity and struggled to influence the game.
Bruno Fernandes – 5: Fernandes looked out of sorts after being deployed on the right-hand side and had little impact during a major test for United.
Marcus Rashford – 4: Rashford managed only one shot and completed 25 per cent of his dribbles. He was unable to provide the attacking threat United needed.
Bryan Mbeumo – 5.5: Mbeumo was lively and created some promising opportunities, but his finishing let him down against Atletico Madrid.
