Manchester United could revive their interest in Elliot Anderson if Manchester City are subjected to severe sporting sanctions following the Premier League financial case.
United were keen to sign the midfielder before his move to City, but the cost of the deal proved prohibitive. Anderson subsequently joined City for a record fee, yet uncertainty over the club’s potential punishment has prompted speculation about his future.
Manchester United could revisit Elliot Anderson interest
Mick Brown, a former Manchester United chief scout, said the club could consider another move for Anderson if City were forced into major changes, including possible relegation.
“I’ve seen it mentioned that Man United could go after Elliot Anderson if Man City are relegated,” Brown told Football Insider.
He stressed that any such scenario remained highly conditional, adding: “There’s a big ‘if’ in there, because there is a lot of water to pass under the bridge until anything like that can be spoken about, but we can speculate about the possibility for now.”
Brown said United had identified Anderson as their preferred midfield target before his move to the Etihad Stadium, but that the financial terms prevented them from completing the deal.
“Man United are big fans of Anderson, he was their ideal target to strenghten their midfield in the summer, but the deal wasn’t possible because of the money,” he said.
Anderson’s energy, ability to carry the ball and versatility would still suit United’s midfield needs, while his Premier League experience would make him a logical target if he became available.
However, the midfielder’s position depends entirely on the outcome of City’s case. The punishment process remains unresolved, and any sporting consequences would be subject to the final decision and subsequent legal steps.
United therefore cannot yet plan on Anderson becoming available. But if City’s circumstances change dramatically, the club could have another opportunity to pursue a player they wanted before he moved to their local rivals.
