ICE agents shot and wounded a man in Austin, Texas, on Sunday afternoon, with officials saying the victim was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The man’s name, age and race have not been disclosed. Investigators have provided few details about the altercation that preceded the shooting.
Austin officials stressed that the Austin Police Department was not involved. Mayor Kirk Watson said he was “not happy at all” that a shooting had taken place involving someone who “purports to be law enforcement”.
A large police presence remained at the scene in North Austin as authorities sought answers about what happened.
Police chief Lisa Davis said the police, emergency medical services and the mayor’s office were all demanding a full account of the events leading up to the shooting.
EMS chief Rob Luckritz said emergency crews were not at the scene when the shot was fired but arrived within three and a half minutes.
Congressman Greg Casar called for transparency, saying: “ICE has not been truthful” in investigations into other shootings.
