Manchester United have opened fresh Bruno Fernandes contract talks as they seek to keep their captain at Old Trafford beyond his current deal.
Fernandes, 32, has started all six of United’s matches this season and remains a key figure in Michael Carrick’s side. The club resisted summer interest from Galatasaray, as well as approaches from elsewhere in Europe and Saudi Arabia, and are now working on improved terms for the midfielder.
Bruno Fernandes contract talks continue
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that negotiations are ongoing, although no agreement has yet been reached. Discussions have taken longer than expected as the two sides consider bonuses, clauses and the overall structure of the proposed contract.
ESPN has also reported that United want Fernandes to stay, but that progress has slowed while those details are resolved.
The Portugal international has made an impressive start to the campaign, scoring his fourth goal of the season during United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah. Fernandes struck in the 42nd minute as Carrick’s team marked their return to the competition with a convincing win.
He was one of four different United goalscorers on the night, according to Sky Sports’ match report.
Fernandes’ age is an important consideration for the club, with the midfielder due to turn 33 next year. A long and expensive commitment would carry financial risk, particularly if it involved substantial guaranteed wages into his later thirties.
However, United would also face a significant challenge in replacing his influence. Fernandes remains their captain, principal creative midfielder and a dependable source of goals, while continuing to offer experience as the club reshapes its midfield around younger players including Kobbie Mainoo and Andrey Santos.
United are therefore expected to weigh a carefully structured agreement, potentially placing greater emphasis on performance-related bonuses. The interest shown by Galatasaray and Saudi clubs, where established players can attract substantial financial packages, adds further importance to the negotiations.
