Manchester United lost at home to Brighton despite taking a 2-0 lead, surrendering a 50-year record at Old Trafford in the process. Brighton recovered after half-time to win 3-2 in the Carabao Cup.
The result marked the first time since 1976 that United had been beaten at home after going two goals ahead. Their previous defeat in those circumstances was a 3-2 loss to Tottenham.
Michael Carrick’s side appeared to be in control before Brighton’s second-half fightback changed the contest. The defeat adds to mounting pressure on the United manager after a difficult run of results.
More concerns for Michael Carrick
United were beaten by Manchester City at home during the weekend, while their season also began with a 2-0 defeat against Hull City. They subsequently drew 2-2 away to Everton.
Carrick initially raised expectations after helping to improve the team’s form when he replaced Ruben Amorim. However, performances have declined since he was appointed manager on a permanent basis.
The club strengthened its midfield during the summer with the arrivals of Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Questions remain over other areas of the squad, with United still showing weaknesses in attack and defence.
