Manchester United are considering managerial alternatives to Michael Carrick, with Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann understood to have support among senior figures at Old Trafford.
Carrick remains in charge, but pressure has grown after United’s poor start to the season and a five-match winless run. Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid has further increased scrutiny of his position.
Conte and Nagelsmann among Manchester United options
Nagelsmann is believed to be a particular favourite of director of recruitment Christopher Vivell. The former Germany manager is currently available after leaving his national-team post.
Conte is also being considered. The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss has indicated that he would be interested in a return to Premier League management, while his record of winning major trophies would offer United an experienced option.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is another name admired by the club. Any move for him, however, would require United to negotiate with Brighton.
The candidates represent markedly different approaches. Conte would bring a proven structure and an immediate emphasis on results, whereas Nagelsmann is viewed as a longer-term tactical project with a reputation for developing players and creating flexible systems.
United’s decision, should one become necessary, is therefore likely to involve more than simply appointing the first available manager. The club must also determine the type of football leadership it wants after a period of repeated changes in direction.
Carrick still has an opportunity to improve the situation, but United’s early league form has left little room for further setbacks. The club have taken six points from their opening six Premier League matches, described in recent reporting as their worst start since 1986/87.
If results do not improve quickly, United will have to decide whether to continue with Carrick or make another managerial change. Conte and Nagelsmann’s availability gives the club options, but any appointment will need to fit a coherent football plan.
