Mikayla Matthews has announced she is quitting The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, saying no pay cheque is worth compromising her morals.
The Hulu reality star said on Monday that she had recently learned news which made her feel unable to continue filming. She did not specify what that news was.
Matthews referred to her own experience of “multiple forms of abuse” and said continuing to profit from certain behaviour would feel “wrong and unethical”. She also said doing so would be a disservice to the children involved.
“No paycheck” was worth going against her principles, she said, bringing her time on the programme to an end.
The decision comes after production of season five was disrupted in March following a heated confrontation between Taylor Frankie Paul and Dakota Mortensen. Cameras were taken down before filming later resumed, although Paul’s participation was limited.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has already been renewed for a sixth season, with 20 new episodes ordered. Details of the cast have largely been kept under wraps.
Matthews and Paul have also clashed publicly in recent months. Some fans have speculated that the news referred to by Matthews could involve Paul’s future on the show, although Matthews did not make that claim herself.
