A 40-year-old man was shot dead at the Dublin Sports Grounds in the San Francisco Bay Area, with police alleging that his parents-in-law were responsible.
Jonathan McKinsey, of Dublin, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a car park at the sports grounds on Dublin Boulevard over the weekend. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police sergeant was driving nearby when he saw a man lying on the ground and stopped to investigate. Officers were also responding to several emergency calls about the shooting.
Witnesses told local media that a masked man and woman were involved. They alleged that the man shot McKinsey before handing the weapon to the woman, who also fired at him.
Police detained two people several minutes later after they had remained in the area. They were identified as 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 77-year-old Shili Chen, both Dublin residents.
Dublin Police Services said the pair were married and were McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Zhang and Chen were booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder.
McKinsey had worked as head of engineering at New York Times Games since January 2023 and was based in Dublin, a company spokesperson confirmed.
Police said there were no outstanding suspects and no continuing threat to public safety. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain under investigation.
Jail records show Zhang and Chen are due to be arraigned on Wednesday.
