Newcastle United plan to keep Joelinton beyond January, with the midfielder expected to play an increasingly important leadership role once he returns from injury.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League in the past, but Newcastle have no intention of selling him during the winter transfer window.
Joelinton was appointed vice-captain before the season began, with Dan Burn taking the armband after Bruno Guimarães left the club. He has since been named in a five-man leadership group alongside Burn, Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley.
Newcastle’s changing midfield increases Joelinton’s importance
Newcastle’s squad has undergone significant change in recent months. Guimarães and Sandro Tonali both departed during the summer, while head coach Matthias Jaissle inherited a younger group of players.
Tonali joined Tottenham in July, while Newcastle also added several young players, including Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Touré. The club’s reshaped squad has increased the value of experienced figures within the dressing room.
Joelinton has been part of several stages of Newcastle’s development and understands the demands of playing at St James’ Park. He has also experienced European football with the club, giving him knowledge that can be passed on to younger team-mates.
His absence was felt in Newcastle’s recent win over Hull City, which he missed while unavailable through injury. The club are also dealing with a lengthy injury list.
When fit, Joelinton provides physicality and aggression in midfield, qualities that Newcastle’s younger options may not yet deliver consistently. His leadership role and influence on the pitch mean a January sale would be difficult to justify unless an exceptional offer were made.
