A 24-year-old woman believed to be the mother of a newborn baby found dead in a rubbish bin in Auburn, Sydney, has been arrested, NSW Police said.
The woman was located following inquiries and taken to hospital for assessment. After being released, she was arrested and taken to Auburn Police Station, where inquiries are continuing.
The baby was discovered at a unit block on Harrow Road on the morning of August 31. Police said the newborn was unclothed and inside a plastic garbage bag, and was believed to have been in the bin for up to 36 hours.
Police had appealed for help to locate the baby’s mother after the discovery. Detective Assistant Superintendent Darren Sly said the circumstances had been traumatic for the woman who found the baby and for emergency services.
“It’s a newborn baby, who has now passed away, and of course, what else can we say?” he said. “It’s sad, it’s a horrific set of circumstances.”
