Patrick Clancy has described the moment he held his dying son Callan in his arms during an emotional interview with CBS programme 60 Minutes.
Speaking to Ross Douthat, Clancy said he apologised to Callan as they lay together in hospital during the child’s final moments.
“I said ‘I’m so sorry,’ and I got to hold him, I got to lay down next to him. And he died in my arms,” he said.
Clancy said he had initially hoped Callan might survive, telling the programme that he had been thinking: “Just gimme one. Just gimme one kid,” and that he would raise him “as best I could”.
He said he had planned to give Callan the best life possible and tell him about his brother and sister. But after arriving at the hospital and seeing the doctor’s expression, he realised the prognosis was not good.
The interview also featured Clancy’s wife, Rachel Danis, who defended him in a clip broadcast ahead of Sunday’s programme.
“I would hope people know that Pat is, as I said before, the most selfless father and supportive partner,” she said.
Clancy and Danis also revealed that they plan to start a family together. Clancy said he was looking forward to telling their future children about their brother and sister.
In another clip, Clancy spoke about continuing to talk to his deceased children, Cora, Dawson and Callan, whom he shared with his ex-wife Lindsay.
Lindsay Clancy was charged with the murders of the children. Her case resulted in a mistrial a little more than two weeks ago.
