Jennifer Hegseth’s unofficial influence inside the Pentagon is facing renewed scrutiny as military whistleblowers accuse her husband, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, of presiding over a chaotic and demoralised department.
Mrs Hegseth, 49, has become a constant presence alongside the 46-year-old defence chief, appearing at official events, meeting President Donald Trump, training with Marines and attending high-level discussions despite holding no formal Pentagon post.
Her prominent role has reportedly unsettled staff. Some Department of Defence employees have privately compared her to Yoko Ono, the wife of late Beatles star John Lennon who was known for protecting and managing the public narrative around her husband.
“Now there’s a woman with an extremely tight leash on the man she married,” one source said.
Mrs Hegseth has nevertheless continued to increase her public profile. She regularly posts about her life as a military spouse, including paying tribute to fallen soldiers at a D-Day commemoration in France and hosting a garden party for military mothers in Virginia.
Last month, the White House announced that she would chair the first Presidential Military Spouse Commission. During the announcement in the Oval Office, Mr Hegseth stood behind President Trump and kissed his wife on the cheek.
“Every time [Hegseth] travels around to the troops, he tells them that the president has [their] back. And now the families know that you have their back, too, and we are grateful,” she told Mr Trump.

Questions about her access to sensitive discussions emerged last year after she accompanied her husband to meetings with foreign defence officials, including talks about Ukraine at Nato headquarters in Brussels.
Sources said she had been seen taking notes and photographs during some meetings. It also emerged that she had been included in a sensitive Signal chat concerning US military operations against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
She was also reportedly involved in efforts to prevent reporters from entering the Pentagon, in what critics described as part of a wider attempt to restrict transparency.
People familiar with the situation have speculated that her close involvement is intended partly to keep her husband out of trouble amid longstanding allegations of alcohol abuse. Mr Hegseth has denied having a drinking problem.
One source previously described her as “his parole officer and PR agent all at once”.
The couple met in 2016 while working at Fox News, when both were married to other people. They married in 2019 at one of Mr Trump’s country clubs, with their daughter, Gwen, and six children from their previous marriages attending.
Since Mr Hegseth took charge at the Pentagon, Mrs Hegseth has also reportedly asked the department’s public relations team to include more information about his family values and military experience in official news releases.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell defended her involvement, describing her as “an accomplished leader in her own right and a devoted military spouse”.
“She is a vital asset and a true force multiplier for our mission,” he said.
He added: “Because of her exceptional capability and the profound impact of her work, the Department of War not only welcomes her current leadership but actively plans to involve her even more deeply in the future. She is simply that valuable to our community and our nation.”
Her role has come under further attention as Pentagon staff have spoken out about conditions under Mr Hegseth’s leadership.
“People should know what a mess it is,” one Army officer said. “Things have gone from bad to worse. It’s unbelievably chaotic and demoralizing.”
Insiders have reportedly mocked the defence secretary with nicknames including “Whiskey Pete” and “Colonel Vodka”, references to drinking concerns he has denied. Another nickname, “No Tab Pete”, refers to his lack of elite combat insignia compared with senior military leaders he has dismissed.
Mr Parnell has repeatedly rejected unflattering coverage of Mr Hegseth as “fake news”.
