Police investigating the crash that killed James Wehr and Lexi Kramer are reviewing their social media posts and toxicology results as they examine whether Wehr had been drinking before driving.
The Irvine Police Department said it was considering every possible factor in the collision, including images and updates posted by the pair during the hours before the crash.
“We are conducting an extensive investigation that looks at every possible aspect that contributed to this collision,” the department said.
Investigators are seeking to establish where Wehr and Kramer went and what they did before the 2019 McLaren left the road. Their enquiries include toxicology testing being carried out by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
A member of Kramer’s family said her posts showed the pair having breakfast together, spending the day together, and later eating at Nobu before having drinks at a luxury hotel.
Kramer’s family said Wehr had flown her from Florida to California after they met online, and that the crash followed their first meeting in person. They said Wehr was married but had told Kramer he was getting divorced.
The family member said Kramer had described the relationship as a “deep connection she hasn’t experienced before”, adding that she felt they “finished each other’s sentences”.
Wehr was driving early on Sunday when the McLaren lost control and struck a tree. Police believe speed was a factor in the collision.
Wehr’s family has appointed a lawyer who has indicated that legal action could be considered against the city of Irvine and/or McLaren.
Irvine police said the investigation would take months to complete.
