Emergency services are responding to a suspected shark attack at Sorrento Beach in Perth’s north-west, where the beach has since been closed.
Three ambulance crews were sent to the scene at about 10.15am on Friday. No details about the patient have been released, and the crews were later stood down.
Police and other emergency responders remain at the beach. Surf Life Saving WA reported a shark interaction in the area at 10.20am.
The species involved is not known. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has launched an investigation and is working with local authorities.
In a statement, the department said: “DPIRD is working with local authorities, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.”
People in the area have been advised to take caution while Sorrento Beach remains closed.
The incident is the second shark attack reported in Western Australia this week. Mel Ismail, 56, was surfing alone at Glenfield Beach in Geraldton on Monday when a shark bit his leg and board about 40 metres from shore.
Mr Ismail is understood to have lost his foot in the attack.
