Manchester United made a late approach for Rayan Ait-Nouri on Deadline Day, but Manchester City rejected the possibility of the Algeria international moving across Manchester.
United had spent much of the summer seeking a specialist left-back, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall understood to be among their main targets. Newcastle were unwilling to consider a sale, leaving Michael Carrick’s side without a new player in the position.
Manchester City reject Rayan Ait-Nouri approach
Reports stated that United contacted City shortly before the transfer window closed to ask about Ait-Nouri’s availability. The enquiry was swiftly dismissed, with City unwilling to strengthen a direct domestic rival.
City are also expected to resist any renewed approach in January. Ait-Nouri remains a useful member of the squad, having already operated in several positions this season.
The 25-year-old came off the bench during City’s 2-0 Champions League win over Porto earlier this week and provided the assist for Erling Haaland’s late second goal.
United’s interest reflected their need for additional cover at left-back, but Ait-Nouri was always likely to be a difficult player to prise away from City. The Premier League champions have little incentive to negotiate with a rival while he continues to contribute under Enzo Maresca.
Luke Shaw remains United’s first-choice option, although the club will need to consider a longer-term plan given his age. The failed approach for Ait-Nouri highlights the challenge facing United as they look to address the position.
