Patrick Clancy’s wife, Rachel Danis, is pregnant with the couple’s first child, the 60 Minutes correspondent who interviewed them has confirmed.
Ross Douthat disclosed the news during an appearance on CBS Mornings on Monday, after the interview with Clancy and Danis aired on Sunday evening.
Asked how he had handled his first assignment for the programme, Douthat told host Nate Burleson: “They are having a child.”
During the interview, Douthat also told the couple: “And you guys are starting a family.” He later said he had been “too coy” when asking about their plans.
Danis, a New York fertility doctor, appeared alongside Clancy in the programme. Recent photographs showed what appeared to be a baby bump.
The Lindsay Clancy trial
The announcement comes after Clancy gave his first post-trial interview following the mistrial in the case involving his former wife, Lindsay Clancy.
Lindsay Clancy, 36, faces the possibility of a retrial after a jury failed to reach a unanimous decision earlier this month. The jury was deadlocked 11-1, leading to the trial being declared a mistrial.
She admitted fatally strangling the couple’s five-year-old daughter, three-year-old son and eight-month-old son at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023, before attempting to take her own life. Her legal team argued that she had been suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Prosecutors have not announced whether they will seek to try her again. One juror refused to find her not guilty by reason of a lack of criminal responsibility.
Clancy filed for divorce in February 2024, a year after the deaths of the children. He testified for two days about his former wife’s mental state before the mistrial was declared.
He told the programme that Lindsay had been a “very dedicated” mother who would do anything for their children, maintaining the position he had taken while giving evidence.
Clancy also recalled that she began describing “intrusive thoughts” about harming the children in early December 2022. He said she had spoken of thoughts about hurting them or them suffering from an ailment, but had not expressed any intention to act on them.
He said a stay in a psychiatric ward the following month had left him hopeful that her condition was improving. On January 24, 2023, however, he returned to the family home after going out to collect medicine for their eldest child and a takeaway order placed by Lindsay.
Clancy said the door was locked when he arrived home and that he realised “something was wrong”. Lindsay had attempted suicide, and the children were found in the basement.
After the mistrial, Clancy’s lawyer Howard Cooper said there would be “consequences” for true-crime creators who had included his client in conspiracy theories.
