Rivian is recalling 98,828 electric vehicles in the United States after warning that a notification on the central display could obscure the rear-view camera image when the vehicle is put into reverse.
The recall covers certain R1T pick-up trucks from the 2022 to 2026 model years, R1S SUVs from 2022 to 2027, and 2027 R2 SUVs. The campaign was filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on September 16, 2026, under recall number 26V597000. Rivian said the problem can occur in rare circumstances when stability control has been switched off and the driver returns to the vehicle. A safety alert may then appear across the centre display, overlapping the rear-view camera feed when reverse is selected.
The image should reappear once the vehicle begins moving, but the obstruction means the vehicles may not comply with federal rules governing rear visibility. Rivian said a rear-view image that is not displayed at the start of a reversing manoeuvre could increase the risk of a collision.
The company said it was not aware of any customer reports, crashes, injuries or deaths linked to the issue.
Rivian software update available
A software update has been released to correct the fault and is available free of charge for all potentially affected vehicles. Rivian estimates that more than 95 per cent of the vehicles covered by the recall have already received the update.
Owners who have not installed it are being urged to update their vehicles over the air to the latest available software. They can contact Rivian Service Support on 855-748-4265 with questions about the recall.
