Tottenham continue to back Roberto De Zerbi despite a difficult start to the season, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the manager’s position remains secure after the 3-2 defeat by Aston Villa.
De Zerbi is still waiting for his first victory in charge, while Spurs have collected two points from their opening five games. Their late double against Villa at least ensured they had scored twice in the league for the first time this season.
Tottenham maintain confidence in De Zerbi project
Romano said Tottenham’s decision to appoint and support De Zerbi had been accompanied by a significant transfer outlay, adding that the club remained committed to his ideas.
“Tottenham decided to back Roberto De Zerbi in the summer by trusting his ideas,” Romano said on his YouTube channel when asked whether the manager was under pressure.
“It was a very ambitious market, a very expensive market. So, the message from Tottenham, as of today, remains a message of confidence in Roberto De Zerbi.”
Romano added that he had no indication Tottenham were considering alternative options and said the club understood that progress would take time.
“At the moment I don’t have any indication of Tottenham exploring different ways. I’m told that Tottenham still believe in the manager. I’m told Tottenham knew it was going to take time.”
He said Tottenham could not move immediately from finishing 17th and avoiding relegation in the final game of last season to challenging for Champions League places simply because they had invested heavily in the squad.
“Obviously, they all, including De Zerbi, had different expectations. The club, the coach, everyone had different expectations, not two points from five games. But at the same time they maintain confidence in the process.”
