Rome’s Colosseum has been closed to the public after a 22-year-old worker fell to his death while carrying out an illumination project.
Andrea Moretti, who specialised in working at height using ropes, had been installing cabling inside the ancient amphitheatre late on Tuesday when he fell.
The archaeological park said the circumstances of the incident were being investigated. Thousands of visitors had entered the Colosseum early on Wednesday before the closure could be put in place, with the site due to shut once they had left.
Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by Mr Moretti’s death and called for the cause of the accident to be established as quickly as possible.
“Dying at the age of 22 is unacceptable – even more so when it happens in the workplace,” Ms Meloni said.
