A second child has died after an alleged stabbing in the Blue Mountains, with a three-year-old remaining in a critical condition and a 42-year-old woman facing murder and grievous bodily harm charges.
The woman and her three children were found with stab wounds inside a car parked on Waratah Road in Valley Heights at about 12.45pm on Sunday.
One child, aged five, died at the scene. The youngest child, aged one, was taken to hospital but died from their injuries, police confirmed on Thursday.
The surviving three-year-old remains in a critical condition. The woman was also taken to hospital for treatment.
Several members of the public performed first aid after discovering the family and called triple-0. Neighbours described their shock at the events, while witness Julie Sukkar told 9News she saw good Samaritans rushing to help.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna said the reason the car was parked at that location would form part of the investigation.
“I don’t have any rationale or reason as to why that was the location (of the alleged stabbing), that will all form part of the investigation,” he said on Monday.
“As I understand, (good Samaritans) went to the trouble of lifesaving techniques with these kids.”
The woman has been charged with murder and two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent of murder. Police said she will face a further murder charge over the death of the one-year-old child when she returns to court on November 20.
The Blue Mountains tragedy was one of four alleged domestic violence murders reported across New South Wales that weekend, following separate incidents at Bondi Beach, Wagga and Mole River.
