Sunderland are considering a late move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana as their pursuit of Jack Grealish becomes increasingly unlikely ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Manager Régis Le Bris wants to strengthen his squad before the club’s return to European football, with a wide forward and a centre-back among Sunderland’s priorities.
Grealish had been identified as a marquee attacking target, with Sunderland exploring both a loan deal and the possibility of a permanent transfer from Manchester City. However, the 30-year-old is understood to be favouring a return to Everton, where he spent last season on loan.
Marseille winger Igor Paixão is another player on Sunderland’s shortlist, although negotiations have proved difficult. At least one offer for the Brazilian has reportedly been rejected, encouraging the Black Cats to assess alternative options.
Sunderland consider Malick Fofana as attacking alternative
Fofana has now emerged as a realistic possibility. The 21-year-old Belgium international is regarded as one of Lyon’s most promising attacking players and is reportedly open to a move to the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland are understood to be considering a move rather than being involved in advanced negotiations with the French club, meaning the remaining hours of the window could prove decisive.
The Belgian would offer a markedly different profile from Grealish. While the Manchester City winger would bring Premier League experience and established status, Fofana would represent a younger investment with scope to develop and potentially increase in value.
Fofana’s pace and ability to play from the left would appeal to Le Bris as Sunderland prepare for the additional demands of domestic and European competition. He has also gained experience at Champions League level despite his age.
Crystal Palace are also weighing up a late approach for Fofana, according to reports, giving Sunderland further competition if they decide to step up their interest.
The Black Cats are aiming to complete at least two more signings before the window closes, although a third arrival has not been ruled out. Their recruitment plans remain dependent on whether they can resolve the situations involving Paixão and Grealish or turn to alternatives such as Fofana.
