A 14-year-old volleyball player has been identified as one of three people killed in a three-vehicle crash in regional Victoria.
Tenesha Fieldsend was travelling home from a bronze medal-winning competition when the Mitsubishi Triton she was in crashed on the Western Highway near Ledcourt, about 200km north-west of Melbourne, on Sunday.
Police said the vehicle was being driven by Tenesha’s 17-year-old brother, who was a learner driver. The Triton struck the side of a truck before colliding with another car.
Tenesha suffered critical injuries and later died in hospital. Two people in the third vehicle were also killed.
The Latrobe Valley Volleyball player had competed in the Volleyball Victoria Junior Country Championships in Horsham over the weekend, where her team won a bronze medal.
A club spokesman said: “Tenesha was a much-loved part of our sporting community and will be sadly missed by her teammates, coaches, friends and our wider volleyball members.
“It feels extra special that she was part of our bronze medal winning team at the Volleyball Victoria Junior Country Championships in Horsham over the weekend. What a wonderful achievement to have shared with her teammates and a memory for them to treasure.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.”
Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller said the crash happened as traffic was heavy during the holiday period.
“It was getting late in the afternoon, traffic was really busy, people were heading home,” he said.
