Tottenham are considering a new contract for Dejan Kulusevski, but the Sweden international must first demonstrate that he can return to regular first-team football following a lengthy spell out with a serious knee injury.
A report from Football Insider claims Spurs would be willing to discuss an extension for the 26-year-old once he has re-established his fitness and consistency. Kulusevski remains under contract until 2028, meaning the club are under no immediate pressure to make a decision.
Dejan Kulusevski faces fitness test at Tottenham
The former Juventus player has recently resumed training with the Tottenham squad. While his return has been welcomed, the club are understood to be adopting a cautious approach before committing to his longer-term future.
Tottenham want to assess how Kulusevski performs once he is fully available again. His recovery and ability to maintain his fitness are likely to determine whether discussions over a further deal progress.
Kulusevski had established himself as an important figure before his injury. He recorded seven goals and four assists during his last Premier League campaign and offered Tottenham a creative presence capable of operating in wide areas.
That versatility could make him a useful option for manager Roberto De Zerbi if he is able to regain his previous level. For now, however, the key issue is whether the Swedish international can rebuild his rhythm after such a significant absence.
Tottenham also monitoring James Maddison’s situation
Spurs also have James Maddison to consider after the midfielder spent a considerable period out of action. Both players remain tied to the club, but their long-term positions could attract greater scrutiny if they fail to return to full fitness.
For Kulusevski, the immediate objective is to get back on the pitch and gradually regain his form. A sustained return to fitness would give Tottenham a stronger basis for extending his stay beyond his current contract.
Until then, Spurs appear prepared to wait and assess how his recovery develops before making a final commitment.
