Two people have been arrested on felony aggravated animal cruelty charges after an eight-year-old dog was found severely neglected at a home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
New Smyrna Beach Police Department’s Animal Control Unit attended the property in the 2800 block of Brookline Avenue on 22 September following reports from a concerned member of the public.
Photographs supplied to officers showed the female dog, named Gemma, with her ribs and hip bones clearly visible, as well as extensive hair loss and other signs of ill health.
During a welfare check, investigators said Gemma was severely emaciated and had suffered significant muscle loss, chronic skin problems and open sores. They concluded that she had been neglected over a prolonged period and had not received necessary veterinary treatment.
Gemma’s owners, Shaun Haedrich, 47, and Cathrine Haedrich, 56, both from New Smyrna Beach, were arrested and charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty. The allegations have not been tested in court.
Police seized Gemma to protect her and took her for forensic documentation and a veterinary assessment.
Her immediate care arrangements remain unclear. The police department said it would apply through the courts for custody of the dog so that she could continue to receive treatment and protection.
