Two older adults have died after being rescued from a burning two-storey home in Monte Sereno, California, as firefighters investigate the cause of the overnight blaze.
Crews from the Santa Clara County Fire Department were called to the property in the 17000 block of Rose Court at about 2am on Wednesday after reports of a fire. Flames were visible through the roof when they arrived.
The incident was upgraded to a two-alarm response, bringing about 40 firefighters to the scene. The building proved difficult to access, but crews managed to reach and rescue both occupants.
The pair were taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Centre, where they later died from their injuries. Their names have not been released.
Neighbours went from door to door during the night, warning other residents about the danger as emergency crews tackled the fire.
The Santa Clara County Fire Department said the cause had not been determined and remained under investigation. It also urged residents to ensure working smoke alarms are installed in every room, saying they can provide vital time to escape.
