A woman using a mobility wheelchair has died after being struck by a car while crossing Route 50 in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Theresa Flynn, 53, from Chantilly, was hit at the junction with Plaza Lane in the Greenbriar area on Friday evening, Fairfax County police said.
Investigators believe Ms Flynn was travelling from south to north when she was struck by a westbound Kia Rio. Police said she was not in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Emergency services took her to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but she was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Kia was not injured and remained at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that neither speed nor alcohol was a factor, police said.
Investigation into Fairfax County crash continues
Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the fatal crash. Westbound Route 50 was temporarily restricted while officers examined the scene, with motorists advised to use an alternative route.
