A 19-year-old French man was killed after being stabbed in the neck during a violent altercation in the early hours of Sunday at Fréjus-Plage in southern France.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Boulevard d’Alger, where a fight reportedly broke out between groups of young people, some believed to have been under the influence of alcohol.
The victim died at the scene despite emergency efforts. Three other people, all around 20 years old, suffered injuries and were transported to hospital. Authorities said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
According to French media, the main suspect was arrested shortly after the attack and remains in police custody. The suspect had previously been issued an Obligation to Leave French Territory (OQTF) earlier this year but remained in France after appealing the order. The appeal hearing had reportedly been scheduled for Monday.
French judicial police in Toulon have opened an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing. Officials say the incident appears to have stemmed from a fight between groups, although the motive remains under investigation.
Fréjus Mayor David Rachline condemned the killing, criticizing France’s handling of deportation orders after reports emerged that the suspect had remained in the country despite the removal order.
