Mikel Arteta has told Arsenal teenager Max Dowman that he will have to earn his opportunities despite his record-breaking emergence at the club.
The 16-year-old made Premier League history last season by becoming the competition’s youngest-ever starter before scoring his first senior goal against Everton. However, Arsenal’s increased strength in depth means his route into the team is now more difficult.
Arteta was asked about Dowman’s prospects ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting with Ipswich Town, after the midfielder was left out of the matchday squad for the 2-0 victory over Sunderland.
“Well, I wish we could have him here (at Sunderland), but we have a limitation with the numbers we have,” the Arsenal manager said.
Arteta nevertheless made clear that Dowman remains firmly in his plans, adding: “Max will have his chance. He will have his minutes and he will have to earn them like anybody else.”
He also stressed the importance of managing the youngster’s progress carefully. “You know the talent that we have, the players that we have there, we need to help him and find a way to make sure he continues to develop,” Arteta said.
Carabao Cup offers Max Dowman a route to minutes
Dowman’s omission against Sunderland reflected Arsenal’s competition for places rather than any lack of belief in his ability. Senior attacking options including Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres were among those available from the bench.
The Carabao Cup could provide Dowman with a realistic opportunity to gain further senior experience, with the Ipswich tie offering a chance to feature without the same expectation of regular Premier League involvement.
Arsenal’s depth also allows Arteta to avoid rushing the teenager into the first team. Having already made an impression at 16, Dowman must now demonstrate that he can cope with the physical demands of senior football, make effective decisions under pressure and contribute consistently.
Arteta’s message represents a challenge rather than a withdrawal of support: Dowman will be given opportunities, but his place in one of England’s strongest squads must be earned.
