A new farmers’ market in southeast Atlanta is bringing fresh produce and locally made goods to the Lakewood area, where residents have long had limited access to healthier food.
Organised by Ruth Walker, the Lakewood Sunday Farmers’ Market was launched in June in a car park off Jonesboro Road. More than a dozen traders gathered there on Sunday as part of an effort to tackle food insecurity and support small businesses in the community.
Lakewood has been described as a food desert, with many residents relying on nearby corner shops that offer little fresh fruit or vegetables. Walker’s stall sells produce, while other vendors offer goods including pies, handmade soap and fragrances.
Walker said she wanted to respond to a clear gap in the neighbourhood and create a place where people could buy fresh food locally.
“Along with the community support, we can make this into a beautiful venture for Lakewood,” she said.
Matt Westmoreland, an Atlanta City Council member, described the market as an important positive development for the area. Representatives of the Glenrose Heights Neighborhood Association said residents had previously lacked a convenient local source of fresh produce.
The initiative also aims to improve the appearance of the surrounding area. Walker commissioned a muralist to paint the market building after receiving permission from the property owner, helping to brighten a prominent corner.
The Lakewood Sunday Farmers’ Market is open every Sunday from 10am to 4pm on Jonesboro Road.
