The trailer for Being Heumann has been released as Ruth Madeley attracts early Oscar attention for her lead performance in Sian Heder’s new film.
Madeley plays a young disabled woman who joins a coalition of activists in 1977 after deciding they have had enough. Their protest escalates when hundreds take over government offices and refuse to leave until a bureaucrat, played by Mark Ruffalo, takes action.
The occupation becomes the longest of a federal building in American history, with the film following the movement’s unexpected leaders as they attempt to navigate a path that has not previously been laid out for them.
Being Heumann cast and London premiere
Being Heumann is Heder’s follow-up to CODA, which won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
The cast also includes Madeline Delp, Dylan O’Brien, Rob Delaney and Daniel Durant, who appeared in CODA. The film features an ensemble described as the largest assortment of Disabled actors ever.
Madeley and Delaney joined Heder at the BFI London Film Festival on Monday for the film’s UK premiere.
Madeley is currently ranked seventh for a possible Best Actress nomination in predictions on Kalshi, adding to the awards-season interest surrounding the film.
