Xabi Alonso was signalling his frustration with Chelsea’s squad and transfer business when he introduced 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli during the 3-0 defeat by Brentford, according to former Blues midfielder Joe Cole.
Nicoll-Jazuli was brought on as Chelsea chased the game, with Cole arguing that the decision highlighted the limited options available to Alonso. The teenager’s appearance came during another troubled defensive display from the visitors.
Chelsea conceded three goals in the second half, taking their total for the opening five Premier League matches to 12. That leaves them with the worst defensive record in the division.

Cole said Alonso’s decision to turn to a player so young was intended to send a clear message to those in charge at Stamford Bridge.
“Xabi Alonso is sending a message to the board saying we have not got enough and I’m putting a 16-year-old kid into midfield when we are chasing a game away to our rivals,” Cole said.
“That was clear as day for me. And the way he walked off at the end, I think he is furious with that.”
Chelsea had started the match with Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco together in midfield, a combination Cole suggested was not ideal for a side aiming to challenge for the Premier League title or, at the very least, secure a place in the top four.
Moises Caicedo’s absence through injury has further reduced Alonso’s options, while Enzo Fernandez’s summer move to Manchester City has left a significant gap that Chelsea have not adequately filled.
There is also limited cover behind Caicedo, with Henderson facing questions over whether he should be playing regularly at this level and Barco still young and new to the Premier League.
