Jamie Carragher believes the Premier League title race is already developing into a contest between Arsenal and Manchester City, with the former Liverpool defender unable to see another club keeping pace with the leading pair.
City strengthened their position on Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. The result restored their three-point advantage over defending champions Arsenal after six matches.
Arsenal and Manchester City set the early pace
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, Carragher said the two clubs had established a clear gap over the rest of the division.
“They’re the two best teams by a mile, we know that, and no one else is really going to compete with them for the title,” he said.
He stopped short of placing City above Arsenal at this stage of the campaign, saying it was “hard to do that this early”. However, he pointed to the champions’ impressive away wins at both Old Trafford and Anfield as evidence of their strength.
City have won all six of their Premier League fixtures and have already overcome two of the most difficult away challenges on the calendar. Their perfect start has given them early momentum in the title race.
Arsenal, though, have continued to collect important results. They came from behind to beat Leeds 2-1 on Saturday despite not producing their best performance, underlining their ability to respond under pressure.
After six matches, Carragher’s assessment represents a bold prediction, but Arsenal and Manchester City are already showing signs of pulling away from the chasing pack.
