Michael Carrick believes Patrick Dorgu’s return to Manchester United can feel like the arrival of a new signing after the Denmark international’s progress was disrupted by injury.
The 21-year-old has impressed since moving to Old Trafford, showing he can operate in several positions. However, an injury sustained in January kept him out for a prolonged spell, with the Premier League reporting in April that he was working towards a return at Carrington.
Carrick now views Dorgu’s availability as a significant boost, particularly given his ability to provide options on both flanks and further forward.
Michael Carrick praises Patrick Dorgu’s versatility
“He can certainly play there, he has done and I am not saying he can’t do that,” Carrick said when asked about Dorgu’s suitability at left-back.
“The way we’ve worked since I’ve been here, he’s unfortunately been injured for some time. For me he’s almost like a new player to have, like a new signing in some ways because he’s added so much to the group.
“He played off the right for Denmark and scored a great goal in the summer, he can play left-back. He can do a number of things. At some point he might have to do that. There are times in training when he does it.”
Dorgu joined United as a left-sided player but has increasingly demonstrated his attacking qualities in more advanced roles. Carrick believes the club must make full use of the youngster’s physical and technical attributes.
“He’s only young and having the attributes he has got, we have to try and get the most out of him,” the United head coach added.
The comments come with United preparing for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Everton, when Dorgu could provide valuable depth as Carrick continues to shape his squad.
Luke Shaw remains an established option at left-back, but Dorgu’s flexibility could give him an opportunity to challenge for regular involvement in that position as well as on the wing.
United strengthened their midfield during the summer with the additions of Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Carrick’s latest assessment suggests that Dorgu’s return may offer another important solution without the need for a further addition.
